KFKQ Conway Radio Laboratories
KFKQ was the first radio station established in Conway, Arkansas. The station, owned by Ben H. Woodruff of Conway Radio Laboratories, received its license from the U.S. Department of Commerce on October 2, 1923. The station operated with 150 watts of power at 1340 kilocycles.
Woodruff broadcast local piano music, singing groups, and sermons irregularly on Tuesday and Friday evenings. The studio was located in Woodruff's front yard at 1910 Tyler Street. The slogan of the station came from the call letters: "Known for Knowledge Quest." The station went out of "business" when the license expired on November 25, 1925. Woodruff found that he could not afford the $500 flat fee expected by equipment manufacturers and license holders.
Woodruff opened a radio store in the 1920s selling tuners, condensers, speakers, and other equipment in the old Conway Theatre Building.
