Bear Cave

Bear Cave is a rock formation found in Petit Jean State Park in rural Conway County, Arkansas. The cave is found at the end of a quarter of a mile hike on the south rim of a Hartshorne-era sandstone formation. The water-eroded rocks found here are 300 million years old, and were produced as sediment that accumulated at the bottom of an ancient sea that covered the area.
The cave is named for a legend involving two hunter who encountered a black bear here and, in their fright, scrambled into a cave midway upa cliff face. Safely ensconced in the cave they shot the bear, which legend holds was last bear on Petit Jean Mountain.
Other rock formations found along the Bear Cave trail are the Eye of the Needle and Skull Rock.
