Joseph Wysong Vestal established the Vestal Nursery, a wholesale and retail nursery and floral business, in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Vestal was a native of Harveyburg, Ohio. The firm began in Cambridge City, Indiana, in 1860. Vestal relocated his business to Arkansas in 1880, purchasing 130 acres along the Arkansas River from the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railway. When Vestal died in 1917 his son Charles Vestal took over ownership of the company until his own death in 1928.

The old Vestal Nursery chimney, all that remains of a large heated greenhouse operation, still stands near the River Road in North Little Rock. The chimney is expected to become a centerpiece of the Rockwater Village New Urbanist housing development.
