M. Crowell was a farmer, physician, and merchant in Solgohachia, Arkansas.

Crowell was born to Jacob and Rachel Crowell in North Carolina on February 15, 1830. Crowell was one of eleven children. The family moved from North Carolina to Georgia in 1831, then to Spaulding County, Alabama in 1865. Crowell was home schooled and attended public school in Deadville, Alabama. He learned medicine in Macon, Georgia, and elsewhere in Alabama.

On October 30, 1850, he married Nancy A. Dorcutt of Georgia. Together they had five children. In 1870 the couple resettled in Washington Township in Conway County. Crowell farmed and practiced medicine in Solgohachia until 1884, when he opened a general store there.
