History and Mission

UAMS dates back to September 1879 when eight physicians met in the Sperindio Hotel and organized the Medical Department of the University of Arkansas in affiliation with the Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville). The first physicians and charter members of the Medical Department were Edwin Bentley, Augustus Louis Breysacher, James Dibrell, Philo Oliver Hooper, Roscoe Greene Jennings, John McAlmont, James H. Southall, and Claibourne Watkins. The first class of students numbered twenty.

The Medical Department combined with the proprietary College of Physicians and Surgeons Medical School in 1911. During the Great Depression the school moved to the building presently occupied by the Bowen School of Law near MacArthur Park. In 1956 the school moved to its present location and became known as University Hospital, and later as the University of Arkansas Medical Center (UAMC) and niversity of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

In 1995, UAMS was granted independence from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

According to the institutional statement of UAMS, its mission is to improve the health, healthcare and well-being of all Arkansans and of others in the region, nation and the world through education, clinical programs, researches and services.
