L. A. Niven was a botanist and the first professor of agriculture at the Arkansas State Normal School in Conway, Arkansas. Niven was also the editor of Southern Farming printed in Atlanta, Georgia.

Niven left Conway to become professor of elementary agriculture at Winthrop Normal School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was replaced at the normal school by W. S. Sowder.
