James Monroe Cox

James Monroe Cox (February 26, 1860 - January 3, 1948) was the president of Philander Smith College from 1898 to 1924.

Cox was born to John Wesley and Martha Cox in Fredonia, Alabama, on February 26, 1860. He was educated in the schools of Atlanta, Georgia, and received his undergraduate degree from Clark University there in 1884. He was awarded an advanced B.D. degree from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta in 1886. Cox began teaching ancient languages at Philander Smith in 1887. Cox married Hattie W. Robinson of Macon, Georgia, on September 20 of that same year. They had five children together. Cox attained a doctorate of divinity from Gammon Seminary in 1898.

Cox died on January 3, 1948. The Cox Administration Building is named in his honor.
