The shopping center was developed by Australian company Centro Properties in 1986. It is considered the first exurban shopping center north of Little Rock.

Conway Towne Center originally was anchored by a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Other tenants included J.C. Penney, Cinemark Cinema 6, Sears Roebuck, Bath and Body Works, Cato Corporation, Hibbett Sports, Regis Hair Salon, and an El Chico restaurant.
