Elizabeth Eckford

Elizabeth Ann Eckford was a student and member of the Little Rock Nine during the Little Rock Crisis of 1957. Eckford attempted to enter and integrate Central High School on September 4, 1957, but was turned away. A second attempt on September 23rd. Following the second attempt, President Dwight D. Eisenhower intervened by sending troops to Little Rock to protect the Nine as they attempted to integrate the school. On September 24th Eckford attempted twice to attend Central High, but due to a change in plan which Eckford did not know about because her family had no phone the other students were not with her. Her family moved away from Little Rock before the school became integrated.

Eckford graduated from Central State University where she received a bachelor's degree in history. Eckford moved back to Little Rock as an adult. She became a substitute teacher and later a probation officer.

Eckford was born on October 4, 1941.
