James Monroe Cox

James Monroe Cox was the president of Philander Smith College from the 1890s into the 1910s. Cox became leader of the college in 1896.
Cox was born to John Wesley and Martha Cox in Fredonia, Alabama, on February 26, 1860. He received his undergraduate degree from Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1884, and his graduate degree from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta in 1886. He attained a doctorate of divinity in 1898.
Cox married Hattie W. Robinson of Macon, Georgia, on September 20, 1887.
