The Excelsior Hotel opened on East Markham Avenue in downtown Little Rock in November 1982. The hotel was developed by the Doyle Rogers Company and B. Finley Vinson. The first general manager of the hotel was Art Beaulier. The University of Arkansas originally leased space on the lower level of the hotel facing the river as a conference center space.

The Excelsior reopened as a Peabody Hotel in 2001 after a $40 million renovation.
