Daisy L. Gatson Bates (1914-1999) was advisor to the Little Rock Nine during the 1957 Central High School desegregation crisis. Bates was also publisher with her husband L.C. Bates of the Arkansas State Press newspaper beginning in May 1941. The newspaper competed with the black publication Southern Mediator Journal.
