Hugh Patterson Jr. was born in Cotton Plant, Mississippi, on February 8, 1915. He attended public school in Pine Bluff, and worked in the offices of the Adams Lithographic and Printing Company. Patterson graduated from Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia. After graduating he studied the graphic arts in New York and Washington, DC. He married Louise Heiskell, daughter of Gazette president and editor John Netherland Heiskell, on March 29, 1944. The couple has two sons: Carrick H. Patterson and Ralph B. Patterson.
Patterson is a former president of the Little Rock Urban Progress Association.
