History and Mission

UAMS dates back to September 1879 when eight physicians met in the Sperindio Hotel and organized the Medical Department of the University of Arkansas in affiliation with the Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville). The first physicians and charter members of the Medical Department were Edwin Bentley, Augustus Louis Breysacher, James Dibrell, Philo Oliver Hooper, Roscoe Greene Jennings, John McAlmont, James H. The Medical Department combined with the proprietary College of Physicians and Surgeons Medical School in 1911.
