The Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was organized by women who were concerned about alcohol causing problems to families and society. The union was established in 1873 and quickly became a national union with over 1,000 branches across the United States.

From the 1870s- 1890s WCTU was the largest organization seeking prohibition. The union promoted abstaining from alcohol as well as stopping any establishment from selling liquor.
