Donham received his LL.B. from the Missouri Law College in 1902. He was admitted to the Missouri and Arkansas bars in 1902.
Donham served as a county judge in Saline County from 1908 to 1912. The American Bauxite Company, First National Bank of Benton, and St. Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railroad all retained his services as a lawyer.
