The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a public university and academic medical complex in Little Rock, Arkansas. The university is divided into five colleges and the UAMS Graduate School. The five colleges are the College of Medicine, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Related Professions, and the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health. The university also hosts a number of subsidiary institutes, including the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the Psychiatric Research Institute, and the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. UAMS is part of the University of Arkansas system.

History and Mission

UAMS dates back to 1879 when a medical program with 8 physicians and 20 students was started with an affiliation with the Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville). In 1995, UAMS was grated independence from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

According to the institutional statement of UAMS, its mission is to improve the health, healthcare and well-being of all Arkansans and of others in the region, nation and the world through education, clinical programs, researches and services.
