Union Life Insurance Company was established long ago in Little Rock, Arkansas. Union Life was an original occupant of the Union Life Building (now known as the Centre Place Building at 212 Center Street in downtown Little Rock.

Jack Stephens purchased the assets of the company in 1959.

Jefferson National Life Insurance Company purchased Union Life in 1990. Since then the assets of the company have been merged into Great American Reserve, Conseco Life Insurance Company, Conseco Variable Insurance Company, Jefferson National Life Insurance Company (again), and then Protective Life Insurance Company. Protective Life operates out of Birmingham, Alabama.
