Sam Strauss Sr.

Sam Strauss Sr. was the last president of Pfeifer's Department Store before it was sold to Dillard's in 1963. He rose through the ranks at the store from buyer beginning in 1924.

Strauss was also heavily involved in community activities. He was co-founder of the Urban Progress Association and a civic leader in Little Rock. Strauss led campaigns to fund the Arkansas Arts Center and bring the Little Rock Air Force Base to the region. He was also involved in the work of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, the Little Rock Boys Club, Community Chest, the Committee of 100, and a former chairman of Metroplan. He also led the effort to install parking meters in the city.
