Richard Sheppard Arnold was judge on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals from 1980 to 2004. President Clinton called Arnold "probably the most brilliant man on the federal bench," and considered him a finalist for elevation to the U.S. Supreme Court bench.

Arnold lost the 1966 U.S. Congressional race to David Pryor.

Arnold was born on March 26, 1936, and died from complications of lymphoma in 2004. He attended Exeter Academy, Yale University and Harvard Law School.

Arnold was survived by his second wife Kay Kelley Arnold and his brother Judge Morris "Buzz" Arnold who has served on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals since 1992. Arnold was originally married to Gale Hussman, sister of Democrat-Gazette newspaper publisher Walter E. Hussman Jr.. His grandfather was Texarkana lawyer William H. Arnold. His father was Richard Lewis Arnold.
