Johnnie Ruth Holcomb was vice president of Stephens Inc. in Little Rock. She was also a prominent local philanthropist and downtown booster. In a famous exchange with developer Jimmy Moses on opening day of the River Market in July 1996 she called and is said to have cried, "I'm sitting at a traffic light at Markham and Cumberland streets in downtown Little Rock. I'm in a traffic jam on a Saturday morning, and I have tears in my eyes! There are people everywhere. We've done it!" Holcomb was also a member of the Breast Cancer Control Advisory Board. She succumbed to the disease after a five year fight in 2001.
