The team was initially dubbed the "RazorBlades" and had a razorback pig mascot until a protest by the University of Arkansas led to a change in name and mascot.
The RiverBlades played their first game at ALLTEL Arena on October 28, 1998. Their crosstown rivals were the Arkansas GlacierCats. The team hug up its skates in 2003.
