Arkansas Female College was founded in Little Rock, Arkansas, in August 1871. Members of the original board of trustees were W. D. Blocher, J. B. Bond, B. T. Embry, E. H. English, J. G. Fletcher, D. J. Fones, A. H. Garland, J. J. McAlmont, I. C. Mills, W. C. Ratcliffe, W. Thompson, and C. T. Walker.

The first class of students matriculated on October 1, 1874, in a building at 411 East Seventh Street. In 1889 the college moved to the intersection of Rock and Fourteenth streets.
