John W. Carlin is a former National Archivist.

Carlin was appointed by President Clinton in 1995, but in 2005 he was forced into retirement by President George W. Bush. Carlin objected to Bush's Executive Order 13233, which limited access to the records of past presidential administrations. The Bush administration did not renew Carlin's post as Archivist of the United States. The order was revoked by President Obama on January 21, 2009.

Carlin appointed David E. Alsobrook as director of the Clinton Presidential Materials Project in 2000.
