Walter V. Smiley was the founder of Systematics, Inc. in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1968. He remained chief executive officer of the company for twenty years. Systematics was a provider of financial software for banks worldwide. Systematics was purchased by the ALLTEL Corporation in 1990 for $550 million. Smiley is also chairman of the board of the Southern Development Bancorporation and founder of Smiley Investment Company.
Smiley was born in Hope, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1963. He received his MBA from the university the next year. He taught business classes between 1966 and 1968.
