John James Doyne was the first president of the University of Central Arkansas, then called the Arkansas State Normal School. He was responsible for writing Arkansas Act 317 in 1907 enabling founding of a school for the teaching of educators. Doyne served as president from 1908 until 1917.
Doyne was born in Virginia on October 28, 1858. He was an 1879 graduate of the University of Virginia.
