Couch established the North Louisiana Telephone Company in 1900. He sold the company to Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1911. Two years later he formed Arkansas Power & Light. Couch developed electrical generating capacity by building the hydroelectric Remmel Dam and Carpenter Dam. In 1926 he merged his company with Mississippi Power & Light Company and the Louisiana Power Company.
