James H. Lenow was chair of the Medical Department of the Arkansas Industrial University, chief physician at the Arkansas state penitentiary, and health officer of the City of Little Rock. His specialties were genitourinary disorders and syphilis treatment. Lenow served on the board of the Little Rock School District from 1903 to 1906 and again from 1912 to 1915. He also served several terms on the city council.

Lenow was born to James and Indiana Lenow of Memphis, Tennessee, on February 18, 1850. He received his medical education at the Kentucky Military Institute, where he graduated in June 1870. He pursued advanced study at the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia where he graduated in 1872. He married Ella D. Fones in 1883, and had two children Jamie Lenow and Horace Lenow.
