Hiram Scofield was the first public school teacher hired by the Committee on Schools of the Little Rock City Council. Scofield taught fifty-two students in a building located at the intersection of Seventh and Scott streets beginning on August 29, 1853. He taught school in the city for two years.
Scofield was born to William Scofield and Susan (Bishop) Scofield in rural Saratoga County, New York, on July 1, 1830. Scofield was a graduate of Union College in 1853 and the Albany Law School in 1856. Following his time as a teacher in Little Rock, Scofield moved to Washington, Iowa, where he started a law practice in 1858 with A. H. Patterson.
During the Civil War Scofield commanded the 8th Louisiana Regiment of Colored Troops (renamed the 47th U.S. Colored Infantry in 1864). Scofield died on December 30, 1906.
