Worthen was born to George A. Worthen and Louisa B. (Booker) Worthen on September 17, 1852. He attended the [[Arkansas Freemasons]] [[St. John's College]] in Little Rock. After college he became a surveyor and then a real estate agent with [[D. F. Shall]]. When Shall passed away, Worthen joined in partnership with [[Gordon N. Peay]], who also died, and then [[E. W. Parker]].

Worthen was a member of the [[Royal Arcanum]] and [[Knights of Honor]].
