The firm was established in Cambridge City, Indiana, by [[Joseph Wysong Vestal]], a native of Harveyburg, Ohio, in 1860. Vestal relocated his business to Arkansas in 1880, purchasing 130 acres along the [[Arkansas River]] from the [[Iron Mountain Railroad Company]]. When Joseph Vestal died in 1917 his son [[Charles Vestal]] took over ownership of the company until his own death in 1928.

The old Vestal Nursery chimney, all that remains of a large heated greenhouse operation, still stands near the River Road. The chimney is expected to become a centerpiece of the [[Rockwater Village]] New Urbanist housing development.
