The '''Lesser-Goldman Cotton Company''' was established as the Lesser Cotton Company in the late nineteenth century. The company, under the leadership of banker [[Julius Lesser]] of Marianna, pioneered the bidding system for cotton in 1892 by sending buying agents out into the local planter's markets, who before sold their bales to country merchants who dealt directly with commission houses in places like Memphis, St. Louis, and New Orleans.

Lesser organized the company in St. Louis with former Arkansan [[Jacob D. Goldman]]. Goldman became president of the firm. The firm became known by the Lesser-Goldman monkier only in 1900 when Lesser's son [[Harry Lesser|Harry]] and Goldman's son [[Alvin D. Goldman|Alvin]] joined the company.
