		+	The National Air and Space Museum website includes an overview of what the museum does and has in its exhibits. It includes the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It includes the original Wright Flyer from 1903, the Spirit of St. Louis, Apollo 11, and even a lunar rock sample that visitors can actually touch. All of this is housed in the National Mall Building in Washington. They also have another display center that houses such aircraft as an SR-71 Blackbird and a Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The preservation of these artifacts goes on at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage facility in Suitland, Maryland.

		+	The history of the museum is not just what is physically displayed in the museum. The actual site is home to the place where Thaddeus S. Lowe inflated his hot air balloon and flew. This act was the first “demonstration of aerial reconnaissance” and led to the creation of a balloon corps for the Union Army. The building has over 50,000 artifacts that each tells a story of their own. These artifacts range in size from microchips to Saturn V rockets. The collection began in 1876 when a group of kites was acquired from the Chinese Imperial Commison. At that point, all of the artifacts were displayed in the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries building and later in a nearby shed.

		+	Both President Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson played large roles in establishing the names of the museums. In 1946 Truman signed Public Law 722 which established the Smithsonian’s National Air Museum, but it was later changed by Public Law 89-509 by Johnson to the “National Air and Space museum to memorialize the development of both aviation and spaceflight.” Later on in 1993, President Bill Clinton signed a law that allowed an extension for the museum at Dulles International Airport for aircraft to be flown in. Three years later he authorized the museum to construct Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center which houses the Blackbird and Superfortress. It is staffed by 260 employees and 500 volunteers.

		+	Sometimes people wonder ‘if these walls could talk what would they say?’ Now they do. [murmur]is an oral history project that records stories told about specific locations. It is an interactive storytelling map. For each of these locations, there is a telephone number in which anyone can call and listen to a story while standing in the exact location or perhaps even walking a certain path.

		+	The stories range from personal to historic and are told from the first person point of view “as if the storyteller is just out for a stroll and was casually talking about their neighborhood to a friend.” The website has a cartoon map that almost makes it look fictional. When you click on a location, you can view an actual picture of the place while listening to a story about it, so that you can imagine the place if can’t be there.

		+	[murmur] was first established in Toronto's Kensington Market in 2003. Projects were also launched in Vancouver's Chinatown, St. Laurent Boulevard in Montreal, neighborhoods in Toronto and Calgary, and San Jose in California. [murmur] launched in Edinburgh in January 2007, in Dublin Docklands in May 2007, and in Australia in Geelong in 2009.

		+	On a more personal note, I found this oral history project to be very interesting. It reminded me of Dial-a-Story I sometimes called when I was a kid, but cooler. I recommend others to take a look at it.

Set as a 19th century fishing town, this museum is a living, breathing testament to the traditions of our maritime ancestors. Visitors can hear the local sea stories at Stone’s General Store, tour historic vessels, and learn traditional sea shanties sung by shipboard workers.

		+	Along with the town’s vast array of historical artifacts, the museum is also seeking to collect the oral histories of mariners across the world. Interviewers aim to capture the stories of everyday men and women who had or still have a connection to the sea. For example, John Borge gives a step-by-step explanation of drying cod fish in a flake yard, Elisha Osborn gives an account of whaling off the coast of Long Island, a lighthouse attendant recounts what it’s really like to live in a lighthouse!

The site has several categories: The ROHO (Regional Oral History Project) Homepage, the Featured Projects Category, a Collections list, an Education portal and a Resources section. The homepage features a Transcript of the Month, a Featured Project, a News bulletin for the site, and a browse/search function.

		+	The ROHO collections are archival entries that cover a broad array of subjects from Fiber arts to Italian-Americans in Northern California to Seismic Safety and Organizations and Issues of the Blind 1880s to 1950s. The topics that organize these subjects range from Arts and Literature to Social movements. Since its birth in 1954, copies of oral history transcripts have been copied and distributed to libraries and oral history collections around California and the West. The collections listed under the Subject Listings Tab are only partial. The Bancroft Library ROHO houses two catalogues: 1954-1979, and 1980-1998.

		+	Particularly interesting is the Featured Projects Link. By clicking any of the links leads the viewer to a separate page titled with the project and containing its own categories and links. All the data is archived to the Regional Oral History Project Main site. The featured projects differ in content. Some are mainly transcript based while others are documentaries, and still some feature video interviews with a biography of the interviewee. The ROHO archives contain numerous projects specific to the regional area (being California) and some that are nation-wide.
