The River Market Development Project was launched with the opening of the River Market Hall in July 5, 1996. It is part of a $300 million riverfront development project. The River Market is an indoor market filling 10,000 square feet and an outdoor Farmers' Market with two covered pavilions which stretch the total area to 15,000 square feet. The purpose of the project is to redevelop the historic market area of downtown Little Rock, Arkansas by encouraging sole proprietors and local farmers to establish shops, stalls, and day tables in the downtown district. These shops are the heart and sole of the River Market, seeing hundreds to thousands of customers and tourists daily. Some of these vendors include Andina Cafe, Big on Tokyo, Boulevard Bread Co., Casa Manana, Coast Cafe, Layla's Pizzeria, Middle Easter Cuisine, River Market Grocery, Scapetto's Italian Deli & Catering, Shaka Smoke Lodge, and VK Brown.

The Farmer’s Market is filled with farmers who deliver fresh produce daily from their own land and sell them from the backs of their trucks straight to the Farmer’s Market’s daily visitors. The produce that is found in the Farmers' Market includes: peaches, eggplant, strawberries, watermelon, beans, peas, corn, herbs, plants, greens, tomatoes, plums, berries, goat cheese, beets, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, squash, asparagus, eggs, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, cherries, lettuce, onions, spinach, and radishes. The Farmers' Market will officially reopen April 28, 2008, and is open year-round as long as there are crops to put out.
The Arkansas Travelers are a minor league baseball team located in North Little Rock, AR, east of the Broadway Bridge. The Travelers are labeled within the Texas League, a minor league division that is made up eight other minor league teams, and played their games at the Ray Winder Field in Little Rock from the ballpark’s opening in 1963 until recently in 2007 when the team moved to a new stadium in North Little Rock called Dickey-Stephens Park. The city of North Little Rock paid for Dickey-Stephens Park by a voter-approved one-cent sales tax with the help of a partnership by the Travelers and Little Rock financier Warren Stephens. Since the stadium’s opening, the Tulsa Drillers’ batting coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed by a stray line drive to the neck.

The Travelers were inducted as a professional baseball team in 1895. The Travelers were the first professional sports team to be named after a state rather than a city, as they were renamed from the Little Rock Travelers to the Arkansas Travelers in 1957. The team is ranked in the AA baseball category, which is a step above a Farm Team, one step below AAA, and two steps below major league baseball. The Arkansas Travelers are currently under the affiliation of the major league baseball team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (set in 2001), and were previously under the St. Louis Cardinals (from 1966-2000) and the Philadelphia Phillies for a short period of time (1963-1965). The team has won League titles in 1971, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1989, 2001, and 2005.

The “hamburger tax” is a plan instigated by the City of Little Rock Board of Directors in early 2006 in order to fund the Clinton Presidential Center. The design for the tax is a 1.5% increase in taxes on prepared foods in Arkansas at local businesses and establishments such as restaurants (including drive-in restaurants), grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, cafes, cafeterias, small burger establishments, motels, and other related businesses. The ordinance is set to be annulled in six years time. The foreseen expectancy for the funds raised from the tax was $550,000 a year.

Residents were welcome and invited to the meeting to profess their opinion on the matter. Regardless of these opinions, the regulation was won with an 8-2 vote, with only one council member present, Alderman Steve Lee, who voted no. The other vote in opposition was by Alderman Leroy Allen, who stated that he would have voted against the ordinance had he been present for the council meeting. Allen felt that the ordinance was unjust because it was decided by the council and not the people. He felt that it should be the people who decide on whether they pay a tax or not; but the council had the final say on the matter.
