He lived both in Alaska and South Carolina for some time before attending Arkansas State Teachers College (known as the University of Central Arkansas today) for one year.

Tedford was born on 2 May 1919, in Wattensaw, AR, to Luther E. and Golden J. Tedford. He had three siblings: Lee, Reece, and Ernestine Tedford. He lived both in Alaska and South Carolina for some time before attending Arkansas State Teachers College (known as the University of Central Arkansas today) for one year.

In the military Tedford served in the U.S. Army Infantry as well as the U.S. Army Air Corps.
