Morris was born in Vilonia to Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Morris. He graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1936, where he received a Bachelor of the Arts. He joined the United States Army in July 1936 and trained at Patterson Field, Ohio. Morris was an outdoor man who liked his guns. His other hobbies included fishing, swimming, and reading.

Morris died near Jacksonville, Florida in an airplane accident. His death was noted by the chief of the Air Corps as an untimely loss.
