Personal History

Jones was born in Arkansas County, Arkansas to Samuel Oather and Cora B. Jones. He had four siblings and was married to Helen Lively Catron. He attended DeValls Bluff Grammar School, Conway High School, and was enrolled in Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) from September of 1938 to January of 1940. Jones worked for the chemical department at Crosset Paper Mills in Crosset, Arkansas, before he entered the United States Marine Corps on August 13, 1940 where he rose to rank of sergeant. He attended boot camp in San Diego and spent five months training at Camp Pendleton, California. Jones received many honors and awards for his service, including the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal; he was inducted into the Arkansas Military Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jones died in Iwo Jima from wounds acquired in conflict and was buried at sea. He is memorialized by a headstone in Huie Cemetery in Clinton, Arkansas as well as the Courts of the Missing memorial in Honolulu.
