Chick was born in Saline Township, Cleburne County, AR. He attended UCA, formerly called Arkansas State Teachers College, in 1928 (winter) and 1933 (spring). His parents were Mrs. H.W. Montgomery, Chester Arthur Chick (1883-1914), Dollie May Henry (1890-1970), and Henry W. Montgomery, step-father (1883-1958). He had no siblings.
