 Lawrence Marion Rushing was born on December 24, 1916 in Augusta, Arkansas, (Arkansas County) USA to parents Fred Sylvester Rushing (1889-1946) and Lillian Omaya Rushing (1894 – 1936). Rushing was one of five siblings, including Sam Rushing (1919-unknown), Elizabeth Rushing (1921-unknown), Fred Rushing (1923-unknown), Alice Marie Rushing Waller (1924-2004), and Bobbie Rushing (1927-unknown). He also spent time as a student at [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_State_University Louisiana State University] in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Central_Arkansas Arkansas State Teachers College] from 1934-1936.
