First-time Schedler Honors College applicants will be required to write the following essay:

Write a 400-600 word essay based on the following: One of our goals for graduates of the Schedler Honors College is for them to become citizen-scholars, ready to guide socially responsible change within their community and around the world.

Next, look at the Honors College statement of goals and values (Click Here to View) and read about our traditions and classes (Click Here to View). In your essay, connect who we are with who you hope to be ten years from now. Specifically, tell us about how you envision “future you” living out a dream while also serving a community. How do you see the specific features of an Honors education helping you to become that future you?

First-time Schedler Honors College and University Scholars Program applicants will be required to write the following essay:

Peter Elbow’s essay “The Doubting Game and the Believing Game” (Click Here to View/Download) has profoundly influenced the curriculum and structure of individual classes in our Honors College. Please read the excerpted portions of this enclosed essay and write a focused response of 600-800 words to the prompt below. Your answer will help us assess: (a) your writing ability; (b) your interest in an honors education; (c) your reading comprehension; (d) your intellectual ability.
Elbow states that he is “not arguing against rules but for rules,” and that the “power and fun of a game is in the submission to a set of rules.” How do the “rules” that Elbow urges the reader to use in each of the two games (doubting and believing) yield intellectual “power”? Describe a circumstance from your own academic experience in which, by setting aside the doubting game to play instead the believing game, you were brought to new or deepened understanding of something.

Schedler Honors College re-applicants will be required to write the following essays:
 
Since you have applied to join the Honors College previously, you have already provided us with essays about how the Honors College would help you live a life of public service, and about how to approach new ideas and information through the “believing game.” We'd like to know about your growth between your last application and this one. Please write two essays, as follows:

First, reflect on your own experience with Honors as a prior applicant, and review our website to remind yourself of our values and practices. Then write a 200-400 word essay telling us about an important issue that engages you now, and detailing how a Schedler Honors College education can enhance your understanding of this issue even further. Conclude by telling us how you would express leadership in the “public square” concerning the issue. Be sure to indicate how your responses have evolved or changed because of the experience in higher education that you have gained since your last application.
 
Second, reread Peter Elbow’s essay “The Doubting Game and the Believing Game” (Click Here to View/Download). Then write a focused response of 400-800 words on these questions: Thinking about your UCA education particularly, give examples of occasions where you have been asked to employ methodological belief and methodological doubt. Explain how employing methodological belief affected your learning. Be sure to indicate how your understanding of Elbow's claims have evolved or changed because of the experience in higher education that you have gained since your last application.
